Glad you all liked the monkey story and hearing about Wacker Drive. You know, lower Wacker was made famous in 1980 in what is one of my favorite classic Chicago movies: The Blues Brothers. Hooray!
Now, what’s been going on with me, you ask? Well, last weekend was great! Friday night Trey and I picked up a pizza, something we’ve only done once since we’ve been back here. I love take out food!
Saturday was the beginning of the annual Landestrachtenfest of the Donauschwaben, this year in Chicago. What? For those of you who’re making funny sounds trying to pronounce the German, Donau fest! It’s a weekend full of seeing old friends, drinking good bier, eating Oma food (made with love, but not by my Oma this time around), dancing, and all sorts of other fun stuff. Not having been at this for a couple of years, I spent Saturday bouncing around, talking to friends I haven’t seen and enjoying the BBK Koenigs Pilsner. Saturday night we spent the night at Dan & Michelle’s and I crashed early. Trey stayed up quite a bit later and got some great stories – ask him the one about the guy cutting up jalapenos.
Sunday we went out to good breakfast before heading back over to hand out and watch more dancing. The end of the evening ended up with an “old timers’” picture. I should explain this, though: most of those in my age group are starting to feel old – we’re in this weird in-between stage where we’re too old to be in the youth groups, but still have enough energy to do peppier dances that the older folks shy away from. Some of us are married, but none have kids, so it’s kind of a weird thing. Too bad we don’t all live in the same city.
Something fun about being an old timer, however – apparently I’m immortalized in Speyer. My friend Jimmy was talking to Trey, telling him about how I was always the most popular girl in the Donau. One example he cited was from last year when his group went to Speyer: Jimmy walked in and saw all kinds of pictures of me all over their clubhouse. Too bad no one told me I was popular when I was popular!
So, that was last weekend. This week went by fast, too – Monday I worked a little from home and cleaned up, Tuesday we went to the Shedd with Vanessa, Wednesday I worked really late, and last night was another CCC rehearsal (really great group!). This morning I got a call confirming a gig for October, and tonight I’m singing the anthems at German Day fest – this weekend is going to be a little crazy, too, but I’ll try to find some time to write!

Man... what a wonderful thing it is to be of German heritage!!! :-D Sounds like way too much fun. Maybe next year I'll ditch the family and come be German with you! :-D
I would have loved to have gone to the German fest! Sounds like a great time.
Viki, I believe you have always been one of the popular people!!!
Why don't I ever hear about French Fests. You know those French really know how to party. I like the Irish a lot too. Word is Irish Beer is better than German beer. ;-) Alas, I don't have enough of either nor the culture to hang out with them anyway.
Kilroy was here!
sounds like an awesome weekend! i love when you convert to German instead of English when you talk about the fests!
