Still alive

Sorry, things have just been really busy lately. Work last week was insane, and though I hadn't started up my evening commitments yet (those start this week), staring at a computer in the evenings was not an option - my eyes had had it by the end of each day - plus I actually wanted to relax a little, as busy as the holidays got. I have caught up on reading everyone's blogs through Friday night, just haven't gotten to comment.

Exciting news is that we bought bedroom furniture this weekend! No more tiny dresser that belonged to my uncle growing up, mismatched headboard & "end tables" (really meant for the bathroom according to Pier 1), and a bookcase in yet another different color. We've been saving up for a while. Add to that IKEA finally having started offering nice bedroom furniture and the fact that we got some IKEA gift cards for Christmas, and that meant we got a bed (didn't need a new mattress), large dresser, two end tables, a mirror, a book case, and some lamps. Best part is, we didn't even totally clean out the furniture savings account! There are a couple of other pieces from the system we'd like, but need to find the room for.

Thanks to Mark letting us borrow his truck, we were able to get in, get the stuff to our house, get our old dresser & bedframe out, and get the truck returned in just under three hours. Given that IKEA was nuts yesterday it was good that we knew exactly what we wanted. Trey went to return the truck and I started on the end tables, and we kept going from there. We finally finished putting stuff together around 9pm (didn't get to the book case) and slept in our new bed last night. :-)

Obviously pictures are not to scale - bed is queen sized, dresser is slightly wider than the bed and a bit taller than the bed's headboard, and the end tables are proportionate. The large mirror we got for above the dresser is about 2 feet tall and runs the length of the dress. Sorry, but pictures of our lamps were not available online.

Although hauling all of the stuff yourself is a PITA and will leave you sore, it's sure a lot cheaper. Putting things together yourself also gives you a great sense of accomplishment. Really, though, one of the best parts about putting things together yourself is that you can have things like end table doors open any way you'd like, so one opens one way, and one opens the other. :-)

Enough for today - gotta get back to work. Hope everyone has a good week!

I love the bed frame. I wanted to buy one like it, but it wouldn't work with my mattresses--they would have pretty much covered most of the head board.

Congrats on the new matching furniture. :)

Oooh, I like the bed frame, too!! Its exactly what I want.
I also want to furnish my spare room, which I think right now, is the priority. I so can't wait for the day I can open that door and have it as "living space", rather than storage space with the door shut (though I'm sure I am saving on electricity as I have the heat turned off in that room).

I love the new furniture! I am jealous, I want new furniture!

I also totally agree about putting things together yourself and the sense of accomplishment it brings.

I hate putting things together! Your father loved putting things together. You are your father's daughter, and I have sons to put things together for me.....

Love the new furniture!

Love, Mom

Love it. Kinda funny that's the set that Danny and I were looking at only in a different color. :-) I totally love IKEA and was floored by the prices they have going on the other day when I was there (kidless mind you) taking a good look at a new couch.

IKEA is the entire reason we have adult furniture. Everything we've purchased so far - entertainment center/bookcases/tv stand unit, a couch, dining room table & 8 chairs, sideboard, some smaller pieces and lamps and such, and now the bedroom set has probably run us a total of less than $4.5K, plus several hours of transport and construction time.

Were we buying "real" furniture, we'd have maybe half of our bedroom set by now...after several years of saving up. Yeah, it's probably not as sturdy, but it's actually more our style anyway. Plus, it makes for a nice, comfortable home. Hooray for Swedish stuff! :-)
