Telephone

So, last night Trey and I had a phone conversation that lasted over 30 minutes (it was around 36 minutes, to be more specific). This was after having had a full 10 minute conversation earlier in the day. I realized at some point this morning that this is a little odd for me, as I haven't had a long telephone conversation with anyone...really since Trey and I lived in Italy and we'd call home. Considering that when I was in junior high I'd talk for over an hour with my boyfriend who lived less than a mile from me, I started thinking about where the shift in telephone conversation length occurred.

I've always been a 'go, go, go' type of person, so generally I'm not available to talk. Most nights I have something going on, but even the evenings I'm "at home" are generally busy. For example, tonight after work I will get on the 5:33 train, which gets to Palatine at 6:20, run to the store real quick, get home by about 6:45 and throw laundry in the washer. While the laundry's in the washer I'll scoop out litter boxes, go through the mail, and sing for about 25 minutes until it's time to throw laundry in the dryer. While the laundry's in the dryer I'll go to the workout room and hop on the treadmill (most days I workout in the mornings because I have evening stuff, but nights I'm "free" I allow myself the luxury of sleeping in until 6!). After that I get back to my building, grab laundry out of the dryer, shower and straighten up the apartment. By then it's 9pm and I want to eat dinner because I'm starving.

Yes, it's crazy, but that's the way I've been ever since I've been living on my own. So why is it that over the past couple of years my phone conversations seem to have ceased? Well, after thinking long and hard I realized that as much as I prefer taking public transportation the downside is that I don't get to talk on the phone. While on the train, I don't want to be on the phone for both privacy issues and because my train is generally quiet and it's annoying as hell when someone spends the entire ride home yacking away on the phone. When I lived in Milwaukee, I'd spend most of my 40 minute drive home catching up with folks on the phone (or learning Italian) but now I don't have that.

On the rare occasion that I am able to call people I usually get their voicemail, and hey, you're all as busy as I am. Be warned, however, because this weekend I will actually be in the car for several hours between gigs and such. You may get a phone call so if you don't want to catch up and have a long chat, don't pick up your phone!

That's all for today - I'll catch up on blogging more later this week, too!

I find that the older I get, the less I want to talk on the phone. I'd much rather talk in person.

And you sound super efficient on the laundry front. Care to come and do mine? :)

Jim and i talk, cumlitively, on the phone about 45 minutes a day almost every day. we're losers.

being on the phone is annoying though in your "free" time - you're right- talkign in the car is the only efficient use of time there is!

I am super busy like you, the only times I have to talk on the phone is the car and late at night when everyone's asleep but me. :)

I phone in the car too often; I'm in aggreance with Karen - talking while driving is an efficient use of time (nevermind the whole distraction thing!!)! Sometimes if I haven't spoken with my parents yet that week, I'll call them on my 5 minute drive to Alvin's (I bet that's annoying).
Alvin and I talk for 30-45 minutes every night that he's out of town (Mon, tues, and weds). It's the last thing either of us do - we shower and get in bed and then he calls me. When he's in town, any phone conversation is less than 5 minutes.

Okay, I am totally dirty. When Martha wrote, "we shower and get in bed and then he calls me" all I could think is that they are totally having phone sex! LOL!!!!

Kendall and I talk on the phone when he's out of town, and we used to talk for hours on the nights when he was on-call and had to sleep at the hospital. Now that he's a regular working man, I make him come home to talk to me. We text during the day. But don't talk.

I am with lisamarie, the older I get the shorter my phone conversations. Mine is worse. The older I get the less I return phone calls period. I have a long commute each afternoon and I just don't want to spend it yelling at people over yelling into my phone. I do keep in touch with my parents and grandmother during rush hour, but typically that is when there is a wreck and I am about to come unglued.

Kendall!!!

Great minds think alike, I guess. You two were a match made in heaven....
I had similar thoughts as I typed it, but couldn't come up with different words to not give that mental image. Then I thought, maybe they won't read it that way...

(notice how I am not confirming or denying any of your *accusations*. I'm just leaving it up to your imaginations. Either way you want to believe.)
