iPods

I promise I will get to blogging a little bit about Texas some time this weekend, but I have one little thought for today...

Last night I noticed a Circuit City commercial, which featured iPods. Now, when I bought my iPod, I automatically went to the Apple store so I found this commercial odd...I knew you could buy the things there, but I wouldn't have thought to do so myself. I started seriously wondering why someone would buy such a 'specialized' product from a 'generic' store, unless the specialty store was not available in the area - what's the advantage?

I just checked websites and it looks like prices are the same at each place. There is, however, a special at Circuit City at the moment: free $15-$30 gift card with the purchase of any iPod excluding the shuffle. Still, if you're going to pay at least $150 for something, would the $15 gift card make it worth not going to the specialty store for it? I'd give that much up for the piece of mind going to the specialty store provides.

Any thoughts on this? I'm genuinely curious as to why someone would purchase such an item at a Circuit City rather than the specialty store if the specialty store is within a reasonable distance.

I'd probably go wherever I see it's on sale. Except I'm not one to go store to store to store to price shop first, I'd look for sale ads. For normal prices, I'd EXPECT the specialty store to be less (though apparently they aren't and this shows they really jack up the costs to be the same!!). However, I'd expect generic stores to be more likely to run sales so you come in the door and buy other things (more likely to buy from a variety than the same brand. I.e. come in for an iPod, leave with a refrigerator, too).

Then again, I never purchased an iPod. Dad got one with a computer purchase and I eventually wound up with his. I only use it when I'm flying.

I'd go to circuit city and get the gift card. For something like this Apple's warranty will cover it regardless of where it's purchased so i'd feel covered using a generic store as the buying medium.

I would go wherever it was on sale. I am super cheap that way :)

Good call on the gift card, and the Apple warranty.

As for sales, I don't think those things EVER go on sale anywhere. I'm definitely a sale and comparison shopper.

I agree with Karen that I would go for the gift card. I would also hunt for the sale or cheaper price. Especially when you are talking about such a specialty item, the product is going to be the same regardless of the store you buy it at, so you might as well get the best deal.

I'm cheap. And on something like this, I'm like all the other cheap-os that chimed in, I'd head for the gift card. Although I'd think twice about Circuit City, because I just don't like their stores.

However, if I was going to buy something more expensive like the Mac Book, I'd go to a specialty store. I don't know why....maybe because it's more technology involved?
