Monday:
Trey mentioned that it was -9 when we left our apartment at 8:30am. We got to DFW and it was 70! After getting and picking up the rental car we drove to Meme & D'Daddy's and hung out with them, Kaitie, and Trey's dad. We met our nephew, Samuel Nathan Johnson, who was 4 weeks old that day and still tiny - here he is with his great grandfather. He's beautiful, and so sweet. Trey mentioned dinner with everyone in honor of Kaitie's birthday - she waited for us to be in town to go out, and was much more talkative than she usually is. We're hoping she comes to visit us this summer (Kaitie, are you reading this?).
Tuesday:
We started down to San Antonio, a trip I have really been looking forward to because I couldn't really call myself an honorary Texan never having been to the Alamo. We stopped at the Shiner brewery on our way down - how cool! And such great beer! We lunched at Whataburger and discussed how wonderful it would be to have such a fine establishment in Chicago before heading down the rest of the way and checking in to our hotel, which was right on the Riverwalk. Dinner was at Mi Tierra, the most incredible Mexican food I've had yet, and we had a lovely evening of walking along the Riverwalk before popping open a bottle of wine in our hotel (Becker Claret from Becker vineyards in Texas).
Wednesday:
Happy anniversary to us! We started the day with sightseeing, visiting the Spanish Governor's Palace and the cathedral before stopping at Budro's for lunch (note: we ate outside, and Trey wore shorts all day). Trey had a prickly pear margarita, and we had guacamole made right at our table. If you ever to go to San Antonio, go to this restaurant and have the guac!!!
After lunch it was on to the Alamo, first stopping in to see the IMAX movie. We spent most of the afternoon there, and although I already knew the story, I must say I have an even deeper appreciation for all of the brave people there. There is a reason Davy Crockett said, "You may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas"...Remember the Alamo (you can almost see me in the picture)!

Sounds like the starts of a fabulous, much needed vacay.
So what's the weather like now back in Chicago? Cold snap over?
the alamo is really cool. don't watch the movie though - that stinks!
Haha...Viki is quoting Davy Crocket, now that is classic. I can almost hear your very non-Texan accent. Don't feel bad about not calling. I spent the week in Reno and Las Vegas for work and didn't do much more than sleep and hang with Holly on Saturday. I'll get up to see you guys soon, promise.

The weather is a little crazy - we got dumped on very early this morning, the snow coming several hours later than they all predicted. It was supposed to start yesterday mid afternoon, but didn't start until about 4-5am, so things were messy this morning! I don't mind all that much, though. Driving in it sucks, but it's still really pretty.
Your new nephew looks so cute! The picture is really touching, so many generations in one little photo. Yes, it does sound like you had a fantastic stay in Texas.
AWWWWWW. Sounds like you had a lot of fun on your trip. Looking forward to part 2!
The movie they show at the IMAX theater in San Antone is different than the one that was in the movie theaters a couple of years ago. I thought that one was good, too, but I think my Texas bias might be showing a little.
I saw the IMAX movie a few years ago when I was in San Antonio with Kristin. Although I don't like IMAX movies in general, this one was very well done, and made the history of the Alamo come alive. Touring the Alamo afterwards, on a self-guided tour was then a very moving experience.

Did you find PeeWee Herman's bike in the basement of the Alamo!??? HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
LOL at Lisa's comment!
Double LOL to Lisa's comment!
