First, the weather up here is nuts! Lots of blowing snow, making me glad I have that shovel in the back seat of my car…yesterday I got back to Palatine and there was very little snow on my car, but there was a drift behind it around 1 ½ or 2 feet high. Little VW Golfs don’t do well driving over things like that. Anyway…
More Wednesday:
So, after a great day of sightseeing and visiting the shrine in Texas, Trey and I went back to our fabulous hotel (T found an amazing place for cheap – we had a suite with a really cool bathroom) and chilled in the hot tub for a little while before getting ready for dinner. We also exchanged gifts – the third anniversary is leather, and T found me some beautiful leather gloves that actually hold in warmth, perfect for my long walks in the cold when my fingers get numb. Thinking about how much thought went into this gift makes me love it even more. *grin* *grin* *grin*
Dinner was at a wonderful steakhouse, called the “Little Rhein Steakhouse,” which Trey picked partly because of the name. The food was wonderful, but I think the company and atmosphere were even better – it was still nice enough to be able to eat outside, and since we arrived a little later we had the whole patio to ourselves by the time we were finishing up our meal. Our waitress even brought us a piece of incredibly dense chocolate cake for dessert on the house!
After dinner we walked down the river a bit to Jim Cullum’s Jazz on the Landing and had good drinks while listening to an amazing quintet – the clarinet player was out of this world. We were a little beat so we didn’t stay too long, but had a nice walk back along the Riverwalk, still able to enjoy the last of the beautiful weather.
Thursday:
Things started off nicely on Thursday, sleeping in just a bit before heading out to stop at a winery before driving the rest of the way back to Fort Worth. We ended up showing up an hour before the place opened (website said it was open at 11, but it wasn’t until noon) so we took a drive around New Braunfels and visited Omas Haus! When we got to the winery things were a little disappointing – most of their wines were actually made from grapes grown outside of Texas, and their only real Texas wine as good but very overpriced.
The rest of the way home was nice. We stopped at Whataburger again for lunch – I love that place, I really do. The evening was nice, spending time again with Meme, D’Daddy and Samuel before heading off to bed.
Well folks, looks like I’ll have to do a last installment later this week – the weekend proved to be a lot of fun!

Your anniversary dinner sounds so totally romantic! So wonderful to have a loving hubby like that!!!!
Are your gloves getting good use in Chicago, now? :) What did you get him?
Texas isn't exactly known for great wines....prob. doesn't have good terroir (that's such a fun word).
Texas has some great wines, just not as many as other places. I think some of it is terroir, but a lot of it has to do with the liquor laws in Texas that kept things from being sold out of state until recently. It also has to do with America's unwillingness to try American wine that isn't from the West Coast.
what i liked about texas is all the walking and pretty scenery you're describing - the riverwalk IS so romantic!
I just wanted to use the word terroir.
New Mexico makes wine, too. however, they bring in their grapes. New York makes great wine (which makes more sense to me, given their location).
Yes, New York's got some great stuff - I've had some nice dry Rieslings from the Finger Lakes area.
