What are they teaching kids in college these days?

So, first, I apologize for my lack of blogging. Things are just nuts. If it's any consolation, I botched up an audition for a solo part in one of the CCC tunes we're doing for the first concert. I kept forgetting our director was listening to people sing yesterday, and lack of focus + a little stuffiness in my head proved to be a bad combo.

On to the subject of my post today. We've got a new girl in the office, fresh out of college. She's helping out our graphic designer (R) & doing some other misc stuff. Now, I realize that there is a learning curve, especially when one is getting settled into to the workforce, but I'm starting to worry a bit.

Since she started she's been given a bunch of stuff that has kept her busy for the most part. Earlier this week, however, she was working on a project for the president of the company (D) under the direction of R. Apparently, R had stepped out, so this girl goes to D and askes her about where some images were located on the server. For about 10 minutes D kept trying to tell this girl that she didn't know where they were because R had filed them. It just kept going back and forth. Fianlly D kind of snapped at this girl - she apologized for getting frustrated, but how can you blame her?

Yesterday this girl came to me with questions about her health insurance forms. This I can understand because certain parts I'm never sure what information is needed either. We got through it with a bit more explanation than was necessary, but that's Ok.

Today she comes to me with a FedEx box asking how it gets folded/put together (the directions are on the box). So, I explain it, she asks again (maybe to clarify?) and I reiterate. Two minutes later she comes to me with the shipping label and asks me how to fill it out (is she kidding?). It took me a good 5 or 6 minutes to get her through it because she kept stopping to double check things (yes, put the addressee's name on the line where it says "Recipient" and yes, this is a box, so check where it says "FedEx Box").

Am I just a snob or is it too much to ask that people read directions?

More tomorrow or Sunday - tomorrow is my CCC retreat, so a day full of singing!

W-O-W. Some college is going to get a bad rep for the quality of their graduates. Some parents got ripped off on the several K's they spent to get someone like that.

you are not snobby. you're honest.

In all fairness to the chic, I don't think there is a course in college on fedex box folding. :-)
Secondly, who uses the information they actually learned in class versus information learned from experiences, mentors, and previous jobs?

True, but learning how to follow directions is a major part of school, and the fedex box has directions even an untrained ape can follow...

sarcasm, my dear. It's horrible that anyone, college or not, can't figure some of that out.

Ah, but 'tis difficult to interpret sarcasm when only written...

So anonymous who posted the 2nd & 5th post - who are you? I'm wondering why it wasn't apparent to you that I was being sarcastic from the beginning, since whenever I use sarcasm I try to use it in abundance.

For anonymous who posted the 3rd post - this is exactly what I meant. People start learning how to read and follow directions starting in Kindergarten!

Directions??? What are those? I seriously think that people need more handholding than others and unfortunately those people do a number on those around them.

Ok, and here's another thing about this girl - she wears flip flops every day. Now, our office is laid back, but it is still an office. We have some pretty high profile people in here sometimes. I would be embarrased if the people in charge saw me wearing flip flops at work.

Admittedly I will wear flip flops to work...but never if a client is going to be here!!!

I have no clue whats up with that college kid. I have the opposite problem, he thinks he knows everything so won't ask for help....

I believe following directions is also taught in pre-school...
