So, I long ago realized that the commercials on Comedy Central are quite a bit louder than the actual programming. Whenever Trey and I were watching South Park or the latest standup special together, we'd always have to turn down the volume during the commercial breaks.
I've realized over the past couple of weeks that it's not just Comedy Central anymore. Discovery did it the other day while we were watching Mythbusters, and some of the other channels we watch regularly are doing it, too. It could be that it's been going on for more than just the past few weeks, but when you don't watch much TV it takes longer to notice this kind of thing.
I never sat & thought about why Comedy Central did this, but now that other channels are jumping on the bandwagon and my annoyance level with the situation is increasing I couldn't help but begin to wonder. The only thing I could think of is that someone figured out that most people get up and walk out of the room, or at least away from the television, during commercials. Therefore, in order to be effective, the commercials needed to be louder.
Any other thoughts?

I think you hit the nail on the head!
What you're experiencing has been around for a while. It's so bad and has so many negative characteristics that there's actually been push for legislation against it (one article i found real quick: http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/12/23/loud.commercials/index.html ).
I've noticed this quite a bit on pretty much any channel I've watched, and I think you're completely right in your speculations.
that's why I love DVR!!! we just fast forward through the commercials!!! YEAH!!!
I didn't realize there was legislation against it! Crazy! I think your theory is right Viki. It makes sense.
