Carbondale blog & cat update

I actually started typing this Sunday, but posted Monday - if it time-stamps it as having been posted on Sunday morning, that's why...

This summer I feel like I've done a lot better in terms of road trips. I guess I just haven't been as over scheduled, so getting out of town has been a little easier. Between Cincinnati a few weeks ago and Carbondale this weekend I've gotten in 2 weekend trips now and have one more planned, although that one's the annual Labor Day weekend trip so it would've happened regardless.

We visited the Garden of the Gods for some light hiking and a picnic lunch on the rock formation they call the Camel, which gave us a nice view of the Turtle. Jonathan took some pictures of us, aided by this neat little tripod thing he's got - it has short, bendy legs that can be wrapped around things like tree limbs or poles, or made into a little stand. I'll have to post a couple once he downloads them and Kristin sends them to me.
All in all we only spent about 2, 2 1/2 hours outside, and while it would've been nice to walk around or continuing with the light hiking a little longer, it was also in the 90s and very humid. Since we were all pretty drenched and grungie (grungy?) we decided to head back home. The rest of the evening was spent relaxing, making dinner, and watching Burn After Reading (has Karen reviewed that one? I loved it - you will, too, if you like any of those weird John Malkovich flicks). Sunday morning it was nice to sleep in a little and just hang with Kristin before heading home. :-)
Another plus to this weekend was that while I left home, I still had a cat. I got to spend all kinds of time with Satchmo, Kristin & Jonathan's baby (check out her blog for some really cute pictures). He's very friendly and playful, and talks a lot, too, so I didn't miss talking to Siggy all weekend. The only way he'd be better would be if he were a cuddler like my guys!
Speaking of my guys, Willie is doing well (anyone who didn't see my Facebook last week - Willie went in for a dental cleaning last week and they had to yank out his 6 remaining teeth). I don't think he's been eating quite as much the past few days as he normally does, but I attribute that to his stomach being slightly upset by the antibiotics. He does seem happy, and I got a good look at the inside of his mouth yesterday when he let out a big yawn - the sockets look like they're healing over, and the rest of his mouth (roof, gums) look much healthier, as in light pink instead of darker pink and irritated.
Now that we don't have to worry about Willie's teeth (when the vet called as Willie was waking up, he told me, "Well, Willie's doing well and resting comfortably, but this is going to be his last dental cleaning..." ha!), we can go ahead and get Sepp scheduled for a cleaning the next time around. For anyone who has a pet but has never had this done - it's really expensive, especially if teeth need to be pulled out, but I'm a big advocate of it. Willie would be dead had we not had his mouth cleaned each time we did.
Anyway, that's enough for now - have a great week all!

My vet keeps telling me to bruch Min's teeth. I have tried numerous times, but I am not sure how successful I am. Min is not a fan of the toothbrush...

Did you brush your cats teeth at all?

I didn't have a vet advocate teeth brushing until Sepp and Siggy were each about 6 and 5 years old, which is far too late to get started in my opinion. So no, I didn't brush teeth.

If I really, really wanted to I could probably start on Sepp & Siggy, but it was not an option with Willie - he's far too strong and it would've take 2 people, one to pry his mouth open and the other one to do it. I knew his mouth was in really bad shape, too, and I don't think brushing would've helped anything with him.

With Min being a kitten you probably still have time - they make toothbrushes that go over your fingers, right? If not, you can try the plaque removing treats, or just get dental cleanings for her annually.
