I kept meaning to write more last week but never quite got around to it (and I just typed "around it to" so I hope I don't spend the rest of this post being dyslexic). Now that I've got two weekends to catch up on...
Weekend of 10/24-26:
We had some visitors from Texas for the second time in a month! No, Justin wasn't back, but Trey's Meme and his sister Kaitlin came up for the weekend. Trey picked them up on Friday afternoon, and Friday evening we made dinner and chilled out our place. Though Trey kept apologizing for the presentation of dinner, it was still tasty - it was our second attempt at a steak with a tomato-pepper/chili puree sauce on top of cheesy polenta (recipe calls for Monterrey jack, but it's not very flavorful that way, so we used extra-sharp cheddar).
Saturday we spent most of the afternoon in Long Grove, which is a mere 10 minutes from our house but someplace I haven't been since I was a kid. It's a little historic village that's been converted into some quaint little shops - well, several quaint little shops - and though it was a little chilly out to be running from shop to shop, we got some great ideas for Christmas!
Saturday evening was Chicago Donau's annual Schlachtfest, or "Porkfest" as Trey likes to call it. "Schlachte" is essentially the word for butchering/slaughtering, so this is the fest that happens when the animals are slaughtered. Sounds gruesome, but it's the one time all year I get to eat Leberkase! There's also stuffed cabbage, pork roast, and the awesome homemade wurst that some friends of our family makes. As I said, this is Trey's favorite event of the year. I always eat too much, too, but not nearly as much as he does!
After dinner at Schlachtfest there's always dancing and other entertainment, and this year the Jugendgruppe performed their competition routine. The adult dance group also performed, so Meme was treated to seeing Trey dance (he's so good!). Toward the end of the evening, the new Miss Donauschwaben is crowned, and then everyone either goes out for breakfast, or makes breakfast at club (sort of like at our wedding...in fact, before our wedding everyone always went out). It was a late night for all, with Kaitlin and I not getting home until after 2.
Sunday morning was fantastic brunch at Papadeaux before Meme & Kaitlin left for the airport and I went to a rehearsal. I love Papadeaux brunch!
Ok, I think that's enough for now...plus it's taken me HOURS to type, so you'll get the rest of the update tomorrow. Happy Monday!

the concept of delicate you eating a big wurst cracks me up!
I am almost afraid to ask what Leberkase is? But what is it?
I'm sorry, it's actually Leberwurst (I always say Leberkase accidentally).
Here's a good link - scroll down to #8:

It's seriously some of the best stuff on earth - we LOVED it when we were kids!
I was going to say, it is usually Leberwurst (and Blutwurst = blood sausage) that you have at Schlachtfest. Leberkäse belongs into a Semmel as snack / fast food, kinda like a burger.
But yummy! I love Schlachtfest! I envy you. :)
sounds delicious! I wish I could be a part of that!!
My waistline, however, is probably glad I wasn't.
Mmmmmm, all that talk of food makes a prego lady hungry! Does Trey call it a Porkfest because he porks all that food down? Or because of the actual pork served?
It IS delicious, and my waistline HAS crept up over the past couple of weeks. Between visitors and being really hungry all the time for some reason, I've been eating too much. I try to stick to the healthier stuff - i.e. less meat and more of the cabbage in the stuffed cabbage.
And yes, Trey calls it Porkfest because pork is the only meat served. We were actually going to invite some friends, but decided not to because of the people we hang out with the most one couple is vegetarian and the other couple has one member who does not eat pork. Too bad for them!
Forgot to include that the reason I think I've been hungry all the time is the cold weather - I think my body is trying to get ready for hibernation and therefore pile on fat. Resisting it is hard - my stomach is growling all the time!
Is anyone else having this problem?
I know what you mean (eating more in winter and all). Plus this is when all the yummy comfort food is around.
I also think I work out enough to increase my appetite, but not equal to increasing my metabolism. So I'm gaining weight. BLAH
