Week in review & baseball

I've been meaning to post all week, but you know how that goes...

Friday was sort of a rough day, or at least had a rough start. It began with a 2+hour train delay due to a pedestrian incident...not an accident. There was a high school girl on the train who got really emotional, and a really nice guy who assured her it was Ok to cry. The upside was that I made a lot of progress on "The Other Boleyn Girl" which I wanted to read before seeing the movie. I finally got to work at 10:30.

Saturday 9/27 was fun. It was Kirchweih for Chicago Donau and as Evi was attending a wedding, I got to be in charge. It was slightly nuts in terms of coordination and lining up the kids (it would be so great it people did the things you asked ONLY when you asked them and not before, after, or not at all), far too loud for me (I had a monster headache by the time it was over), but one of the cutest Kindergruppe Aufmarschs I've seen in a long time.

We were a little worried about the really little kids as we have several 3-year-olds, who generally take a long time to get it. Practicing this particular routine all summer and 3 times Friday night did the trick, though, and the little ones were darling. My favorite was the little group of 4 at the tail end - the one with the little girl who decided to stop in the middle of the dance floor, wave and yell, "Hi mom!....Hi mom!....Hi mom!" for about 10 seconds. Too cute!

Sunday 9/28 I did my normal church thing and then some quick shopping before going home to workout and relax. I made some more progress with my book, and since Trey was out of town visiting Armand & family it was just me and the cats! I, of course, watched the Cubs all weekend, too, but that almost goes without saying.

This week's been another one that's more than a little crazy at work and, as always, busy outside of work. We did have our first opera of the season Wednesday - Manon by Massenet. Though the music was great and the leads were amazing, breathtaking, really, the story was rather blah and therefore we had a harder time staying interested. It was probably harder to focus, too, because we'd had to leave the bar we were having dinner at right after LA hit the grand slam that put them ahead. Ugh.

On that note, I think the best way to describe how I'm feeling about the Cubs can be summed up in an e-mail I just sent Trey, after he wrote that he was hoping for a miracle...

"Hey, it's not over until it's over. If it's meant to happen this year, it's meant to happen. If not...someday. I know you're not a big Pearl Jam person, but I really do like Eddie Vedder's song [see right sidebar for the link]. It's really melancholy in terms of mood, which can be twisted to be either inspirational or comforting, depending on how you're feeling, and is really a tribute to the aura surrounding the Cubs, and their fans.

"As much as I wanted to kill the TBS announcers last night because they started talking about how the game was over around the 6th inning and wouldn't shut up about it, they commented several times on the loyalty of the fans and how the place was packed until the final strike (which, by the was was questionable - Ward didn't look like he went, and it really should've been ball 4).

"Am I nuts because I'm so into this?"

Trey assured me that I wasn't nuts - he's been to Wrigley Field and has felt the Cubs thing. Keeping my fingers crossed for tomorrow night in LA...

Definitely good to have a book in case of such a delay. I haven't read The Other Boleyn girl, but it's on my list.

I also think it's fantastic that you are such a die hard Cubs fan. I say go big or go home!

I am so confused. How did a crying teenage girl delay the train for 2 hours?
Aren't ALL teenage girls emotional?? Will the city stop for each of them??? I think I need more details.

I think I was too subtle...the train was stopped for 2 hours because of the non-accidental pedestrian incident (read: someone threw themselves in front of the train). It was an obvious suicide, which is why we were only stopped for 2 hours and not 3 or 4, but we still had to wait for the coroner and emergency services to do their stuff.

OOOOOOH! I got it.
That's really sad. It has got to be extra hard on a train engineer (are they manned, or automatic?), too.

They're manned. I imagine it would be horrible. The way he was braking, I think most of the train figured out something was going to happen. You can only stop a train that big and heavy so fast, though.
