Now here's one I haven't heard before

This one is a little later than I'd like it to be - in all honesty, I had the pictures uploaded by Thursday night, but just did not finish the post. Anyway...

Last Saturday was Trachtenball at club (I think I explained Trachtenball pretty well last year, so if you need to know what it is, click here). Because of my recent discovery of some distant relatives from the town of Kernei, I decided to wear the Kerneir tracht my family has. It's one of the ones I've always liked because a) it's one of the few from that town that doesn't clash horribly (we have one that has a dark maroon skirt with a sort of hot pink apron and jacket), and b) the apron and jacket are around 100 years old, so I always feel special wearing it.

The extra fun part for me this year was that it was the first time I would be wearing a hat with this particular tracht - in Kernei, wearing a hat meant you were married, so though I wore this tracht a few times growing up, I never got to wear the hat. On the flipside, I found out too late that the hat I was going to be wearing was not the hat I was thinking of...there are pictures of my mom wearing this tracht and her hat is much less gaudy. Oh, well.

Now, trachts from Kernei are some of the biggest out there. Something very funny happened later in the evening as a result. Mrs. T, one of my grandparents' friends who is 79, came up to me giggling like a little girl and saying, "Now, I chust looked over at you, and I didn recognize you. I said to myself, 'that can't be Viki with that big rear-end'." And she just laughed and laughed, and giggled and giggled. Then, she went and told my grandfather, and the next time he walked past me he started laughing. She must've told half the people in the room by the end of the night and never stopped laughing. I played along, and for the rest of the night kept saying stuff like, "Watch it - wide load" and, when I was last in the aufmarsch lineup, "Yup, I'm bringing up the rear with my rear." I think people are still laughing about, and I have illustrations for you:
This is a normal sized me, without a tracht -
you can tell what size I am based on the position of Trey's hand

Here is me from the back - complete with my hat and big butt

And here's me with Oma - yes, she really is that short.
That's all for now!

Wow! That looks hard to do anything in! And like you would get really hot.

And I'm glad you put that she really is that short. Because I was thinking that! Or that you must have on really tall shoes. Hahaha.

I was totally laughing my BUTT off at this post! Wow I didn't know Oma was that short. She's so cute!

Oh my God, how much fabric is that?! I can't imagine going to the bathroom in this tracht... :)
I love that Trey is wearing a "Kleiner Feigling" pin in the first picture. :)

PS: I just showed Martin your pictures and the first thing he said was "Ist die Oma so klein?!"

Yes, they're hot. And going to the bathroom? Are you kidding? You do not go to the bathroom while wearing one of these things - the underskirts are starched, so it's next to impossible.

Yes, Oma really is that short - she's about 4'9", or 175 cm.

you look like a grandma yourself with all that on! i want to squeeze you like the charmin bear!

I love the trachts! You do look like you have a large hiney, but you can still see your small waist.

Your Oma is adorable!!

4'9", that's about 150 cm. 175 is the minimum height to become a model, about 5'7". ;)

Ok, now I know which conversion chart not to use. I am around 173 cm then...

Holy cow! It's gorgeous, but I can't imagine wearing all that for more than 5 minutes! And to think that back in the day people wore crazy layers and pounds of clothing on a daily basis. Crazy!

This Tracht was really only worn to Church on Sunday, then you went home to change into something more "managable".

Mom
Who used to fit into that Tract

Dude. I now know why you work out and eat healthy and are so skinny - beings how much you like wearing those things, you have to be skinny to pull off looking so fabulous in them.
How fun!!
