So, up until yesterday, I figured that FFG was going to be kept on until mid-December – I knew that she was going back home to AZ on December 11 and figured that if management was feeling generous they’d let her stay until then. Well, yesterday I got the feeling that she was going to be let go before Thanksgiving.
Yesterday afternoon my boss was talking a little bit about the office set-up and about how they’d like to move people around a little in order for some of us to be physically closer to other people we work with. They also mentioned that the graphic designer would be getting a bigger workstation, which meant that he would be sort of annexing FFG’s space, and they mentioned doing the physical moving on Wednesday. Well, now it looks like we won’t actually be physically moving anything for a while, but FFG is history anyway.
I sort of feel bad for her, but overhearing the entire talk my boss and the graphic designer had with her, it sounded like half of the conversation was an abridged version of the talk I had with her last month – they told her that people have been saying that they can’t just hand off work to her, but that she keeps coming back to them with questions and can’t seem to work independently. The other half of the conversation was telling her that they’ve seen her struggle with the graphic design work she was hired to do. They brought up an example from last week where someone needed something done in InDesign, a program she should have been familiar with – it ended up that one of the landscape architects had to pick up the project because FFG couldn’t do it.
Afterward my boss walked past my desk (they had this talk with her in the principals’ area, and though my boss was trying to keep his voice lowered – something the graphic designer seems to be incapable of – I overheard everything anyway) and just nodded. He knows that I tend to pick up on this stuff. Anyway, he said that he kind of wanted to keep her until the 6 month mark – I think it’s been 3 – but that she’s done some things to really annoy/piss off the principals lately so that was it.
Again, I sort of feel bad, but not really. No one who works hard deserves to be let go, really, but she has been counseled with little improvement. I guess in the big picture she just has to find the right job fit for herself. As un-feminist as this girl is, marrying rich probably wouldn’t hurt either – either that or she needs to go be a janitor somewhere, or do something else that doesn’t require much in terms of more complex thought processes.
On a completely different note, and to lighten the mood, I just about started a party toward the back of the studio – all I had to do was bring people their new construction vests.

hi viki! thanks for finding my blog.
sorry for this girl - sounds like she was a bit of a putz though.
This is going to sound weird - it looks like you work in an architecture firm. Are you guys going to be hiring anytime soon for a design person (to replace FFG?)
My sister has her bachelors in architecture, and her masters in urban planning, but she really wants to do design (and does pretty well with it - i know she knows InDesign and she is constantly doing design stuff both for web and paper projects). She just doesn't have a degree in graphic design.
Also, at one point she and her boyfriend were looking to move to Illinois (his family is from there). So if you are hiring for a design person, she and the job might just be a good fit.
BYEBYE FFG. What will you blog about now?? hehe. It is sad that she was let go before the holidays...
Poor kid, at least she has her tea.....
I know that doesn't sound very sensitive, but she definitly wasn't cutting it.
lisa said everything i want to say but better!
Oh no, but now what about the tea that she was going to bring back to the office after Thanksgiving!?!?!
Sarah, that was just what I was waiting for. :-)
Beth - have your sister check out the website, and definitely send her stuff to us if she's interested in living/working in Chicago. I know things will be very busy come the spring, especially in the landscape end. She can give me a call, too, if she wants - don't know how helpful I'd be in terms of talking about a designer's experience here, but I can let her know about general office environment.
Such a sad day. What a bummer. We wish her well in all she attempts to do in the future.
Maybe she should get a job at the Flip Flop Hut or something. That's a job she CAN'T screw up!
I agree, I'm most concerned about the tea her parents were going to purchase and you could pay them back.....
So all that teas ordering hoopla for nothing... now watch her parents come home with a shload of tea... and she'll have NOWHERE to put it all!!! ;)
I was kind of becoming a little attached to reading about flip flop girl! It was pretty humorous all of the dumb things she’d do. That’s so mean to say but it was oddly interesting! Who knew?!
