Meeting update...

So, I have a ton to get done at work today and really don’t have time to be blogging, but I really want to! I guess it helps that no one wrote anything over the weekend, save Lisa, so that cut down on my reading time and gives me a few minutes to post…

Meeting on Friday with FFG was weird – what could I really expect, though? I took it from the standpoint I was planning on, and went into how I’ve noticed that she tends to ask a lot of questions, even on simple tasks. This turned into a 25 minute discussion (whole thing lasted an hour) on how she could be taking more initiative/working more independently, and I gave her some suggestions on how to do that (i.e., if someone wants you to compile X number of things into a packet, and make 20 copies, don’t go back to that person with 5 questions before you produce the packet. Instead do a sample packet to take back to the person – that way, if it’s correct, you’re great, but if it’s wrong, they can show you how to fix it).

What made me want to smack myself was that this seemed like a very foreign concept to her. She did admit that she was very concerned about being perfect all of the time, and that she didn’t want to disappoint anyone. I had to stress several times that when given a simple task, the requestor usually doesn’t care about the process; s/he just wants the end result right. I told her this was a job skill very much in demand, and that doing things this way would help her to learn as well. She seemed to like that idea, then talked her way through/problem solved to figure out how to go about doing the simple task of scanning multiple documents, filing them on the server, and filing them in paper files. I guess you have to start somewhere.

I really hope that this works. I know people around here pretty much think she’s a moron and not good for very much. I’ll keep you posted – so far I don’t think she’s done anything stupid today.

I’ll leave it at that for now, but report on the weekend later. We had an especially wonderful time yesterday at the concert!

Glad to hear you were able to meet with FFG. Hopefully she will take your comments to heart and attempt to be more proactive and independent. You are certainly a good role model for that!

sounds like you were very polite and diplomatic. I hope she took it that way. you really are doing a long-term service for her.

Sounds like she may get a clue... well maybe. It will be interesting to see what happens next.
