This is my blog, so I'd like to have the last word on this, and then we can drop it. If you don't agree with me, you're welcome to state that, but please don't lecture me or write more than a few sentences.
I realize that people have very different views on religion, very different beliefs, and very different ways of interpreting scripture. Although I firmly believe that everyone is entitled to, and should, have these differing opinions, there are still those viewpoints that make me feel ill/raise my bloodpressure when I hear of them. I know that all of us have studied scripture, deeply reflected on our own beliefs, and possibly studied other religions around the world, and that years of contemplation have gone into what we each believe and our individual relationships with God.
Beginning with Genesis, I believe in the text that tells about God creating men and women at the same time. Yes there are differences in the sexes, and yes, we each have our strengths to add, but I believe that we should all be viewed as equal beings on earth. Not holding men and women as equals only gives society as a whole excuses to pay women less or hold them to lesser positions - the glass ceiling if you will.
From a marriage standpoint, you can argue that divorce was never as common as it is today, but that does not account for the fact that divorce used to be illegal. How many women and years past were trapped in relationships in which they were abused, relationships that they are now free to walk away from? Sure, people are married in the eyes of God, and therefore should not be released until one member or the other dies, but does that mean that a woman who is being beaten should stick with her husband? And yes, you can argue that the man is being weak and needs his wife's support, but in all reality a woman can do only so much to support her husband - he must take steps to change and must make that decision on his own.
From a life standpoint, if women are always being thrown into submissive/non-leadership roles, not only is that doing a disservice to women for reasons not limited to their voices being silenced and their income essentially being capped, it is doing a disservice to the entire world because it amounts to half of what God has put out there (the viewpoints, experiences, and creativity of the women God has created) is being ignored. For those people who argue that God didn't intend for women to be the head honcho - even if God intended that men be the decision makers but still listen to women and take into account their opinions (for I have a hard time believing that God didn't want women to have a voice at all) thousands of years of history can attest to the fact this simply doesn't work.
I think that's probably enough of a dissertation for right now, plus I really need to get back to work, but I feel the need to say something. For those of you who have made comments that I disagree with, I know that your beliefs are a result of your upbringing as well as years of study, faith-searching, and prayer, but please know that mine are, too. We come from different faith backgrounds and would be wrong not to challenge each other in an attempt to broaden each others' views, but I think that it's gotten to the point for me that I just want to agree to disagree and then not talk about it anymore because it keeps making me upset and uncomfortable to talk about it.
That's all - have a great weekend all.

Amen girl, I completely agree with you.
i think you should go into politics. you voiced your opinion clearly with supporting details for your points and then neatly wrap it up with a disclaimer that is well-thought-out and respectful.
I agree with a lot of your points, as any feminist would. I also think that a lot of the controversy in the scripture readings is semantics. H’s point about it tying with a line further down that calls for men to honor their wives is good and does connect. I think that if the verb “submit” wasn’t used and something more like “respect” was we’d have a lot less tension over the reading.
That being said, I still purposefully did not use anything of the sort in my wedding for the exact same reasons you give.
I agree with you Viki! A lot of scripture is very sexist in nature....I like to think it is from the times when it was written and we have to adjust it to our modern times....i.e. read submit as Karen suggested as respect....too bad so many people take the bible literally.
I actually had a girl in one of my bible studies concerned about a guy she went on a couple of dates with on whether he could be head of household and head of religion in the household. (Evidently the bible says men should be in charge of the home.) I told her whomever is better suited for the task should have it...
I agree with your points as well, Viki. I must also say that I have such respect for you in the way that you communicate on this topic, in that you are sharing and supporting your opinion without being overbearing or judgemental, which too many people are these days. Cheers to you! And go women!
Unfortunately Sarah, this post has left my wife feeling judged and dejected as well as the basic structure of our faith. It is easy not to feel overbearing and judgemental when opposing viewpoints are silenced.

Justin, if it's any consolation, judged and dejected was pretty much how I felt each time I read some of H's and JF's responses to some of my earlier posts. I wrote this really long post because I needed to let people who don't agree with me on religion to know that my beliefs are not just my being flighty, but are a result of my own very deep reflection...and all of that. I'm sorry if Holly feels like that, but understand that that was the way I felt, too.
Thanks to my girls who responded as well. I needed to read what you wrote - on Friday before I did this post I was feeling like I was going crazy.
Religion is such a hard topic. I find that my upbringing is so much different that others. I believe in many things that the church would not necessarily support, like it being okay to be gay. Or being Pro-choice.
I don't think our disagreements make us bad people or even bad Christians. As I've heard over and over again in my Sunday School class, sometimes words are mistranslated from their Greek meaning. Also, many "rules" that we follow were man-made and not supported biblically.
The only person who can really judge our opinions is God, and we won't find that out til we get to the end of the tunnel.
I completely understand and with heartfelt emotion hope you know that was never the intent, as I hope it wasn’t yours. I just don't want to be silent and then be assumed to be in agreement. If there is anything we can all agree about it is that nothing can cause more issues and problems between friends as religion and politics.
Differing views are ok. In fact that is what makes the world the amazingly diverse place that it is. The administration of those beliefs will forever be taken personal, no matter the intention, because nothing is more personal and intimate than how we relate to our God.
So we go and grow from here. True friends accept difference and tackle challenges together. Only when malice and harmful intent is interjected into the debate does it become counterproductive and destructive.
Justin
Well put J. Thanks for your thoughts Vikki. We didn't mean to upset you in any way. I just feel like if you mention something contrary to my beliefs I need to comment as to not imply agreement like J said. If you don't bring these types of topics up in your blog, I will not comment about them, but I can't promise I won't comment if you mention something of this topic again. You know I love you, though...Speaking of, I'm not sure if A2 has talked to you guys about this weekend yet. It's kind of up in the air whether he'll still be in Ft Worth or we can come to Chicago...We'll try to let you know soon.
man...the whole time I was trying NOT to make a point...dang...

Jelaine - if you're reading this far down...don't worry about us - as long as I know by about noon on Friday whether or not you're coming, it's fine (if you do come I want to make sure the house is clean!)
