Once a year, Viki does something really stupid…

Didn’t get to post yesterday – sorry about that, but it took me too long to get going yesterday morning and I felt like I was playing catch-up all day.

Sunday was the annual Tag Der Donauschwaben (Donauschwaben Day) fest at the picnic grounds in Lake Villa (far NW suburb of Chicago – maybe even a little closer to Milwaukee), and I was very happy to have been asked to sing the American & German anthems before the start of the afternoon program. I was especially happy about the American anthem because it drives me nuts that people breathe between the words “Star Spangled” and “Banner.” The “Star Spangled Banner” is one thing, and breathing in the middle of it is like breathing in the middle of any other important word – it drives me crazy (I really do get irate)!

Anyway, they always start the day off with a mass in German, and this year Oma asked me to sing the pope song again. I couldn’t say no, especially since I was going to be there already, despite the fact that I don’t like the song – yes, I still have a major affinity for the pope, but the song is not good. Unfortunately, in a moment of weakness I was also talked in to singing a bunch of other stuff for mass – as much as I love those old folks I swear I cannot sing in tune after singing with them for too long. I guess it paid off in the end, though, because Trey and I not only got to have lunch at the big-shots’ table, we also got a bunch of leftover sauerkraut and potato salad to take home. :-)

Now, after lunch we were a little full, I was still disoriented from singing with the old folks, and it was a little humid out. By the time the program rolled around my head was a little cloudy (and I hadn’t even had any beer!), but that’s happened before. We go to start the program, which is being held inside due to the threat of rain, and it’s very noisy inside. So, it’s noisy, I’m a little disoriented, and I have to sing. No problem. I’ve done this before and have always been fine. Well, not so much this time…dumbass me forgets the words in the middle of the American national anthem (right after “Through the perilous fight). What the hell is wrong with me? So, I start over…and almost forget the words again. Picture me banging my head repeatedly on a wall because that’s what I wanted to do.

Thankfully, no one made a big deal about it, and it was among friends – although there were some nasty folks around from another club so I’m hoping they didn’t quite realize what was going on. Ugh.

Ok, that’s enough for today. By the way, are any of my friends reading my entries this week?

Sounds like fun and terror all wrapped in one event. We all have our moments... they're called brain farts! LOL! I'm sure even though you forgot the words you still sounded awesome!

Of course your friends are reading your blog... :-D

Oh, Viki, we're just impressed that you can sing. Besides, I'm sure they loved you. And exactly, we ALL do stuff like that.

I guess I can't join your German club though because I don't like sauerkraut. Maybe if our German club is in Texas, we can substitue cole slaw. (?)

Cole slaw in German is called "Kraut salat" and of course we can make it for you. THe Germans like to make it with vinegar instead of mayo, but we'll accomodate as necessary.

Of course, as Trey would agree, most people who don't like sauerkraut change their minds after having my (or my mother's/oma's) sauerkraut!

What's really funny to me is that I started singing the line, “Through the perilous fight.. during your blog and couldn't remember the next line either.

I have to be honest...I heard people forget words and start over before and I was just dumbfounded. I thought "How can you be that good and not remember the words to your own National Anthem." Sorry, V, I know that isn't very encouraging, but it's what I thought. I know now that if I ever have to sing it, I am sure to forget it though. :-)

Kilroy was here!

Sounds like you just had a moment of overload, it happens to the best of us! I'd much rather listen to someone forget the words than to sing off pitch, so you're a winner in my book!

On second thought, I second that Sarah. Forgotten words are much better than a tone deaf SSB.

Thanks for the second thought Armand - but seriously, you've been in shows before. Have you ever forgotten your lines and had to make something up to cover? Usually you make up something that's close to your real lines, something that goes along the same lines so you don't screw everyone else up. Well, it's not like you can fake the SSB. Anyway...
