Wine is really great stuff...

Before I go into my real story, happy Easter everybody. :-) Hope you all had good days with your families, or the parts of them you happened to be with today even if it was just on the telephone. I'm happy to report that there was almost no fighting between the Rill boys this morning, very good for everyone here!

Now, I think everyone knows that Trey and I are really big wine people, but we discovered yesterday that we're actually bigger wine people than we originally thought. We attended a free (!) tasting yesterday at Binny's, our favorite local wine chain, that included somewhere between 40 & 50 wines from Australia & New Zealand. Whenever we attend a tasting of that magnitude, we do try to taste as much as we can, but I noticed something very significant yesterday...normally, when we'd try that many different wines they'd all start to blend together after the first 6 or 8 bottles. Yesterday, however, we were still really making big distinctions through the whites, reds, and ports all the way to the end.

In terms of price range, the upper end wines were actually really enjoyable, too, meaning that we actually appreciated them as they were meant to be appreciated. I think our absolute favorite bottle (Dead Arm Shiraz) was a $70 bottle and we decided that if we were actually employed, we'd invest in some of it as complex as it was and as much potential as it had for aging. Go us! We were at least a little humbled, though...the most expensive bottle was listed at $260 and although it was good, I don't think I enjoyed it as much as some of the others.

The best part was, after all of the different wines we tasted and as expensive as some of them were, we found a great $4 bottle that went really well with the Moroccan dish we made for dinner. :-)

Ahh the finer things, right? I am jelious. Holly and I attended our first wine tasting on our last trip to North Carolina at the Bilmore Mansion. We really enjoyed it. I think we maybe enjoyed it a little too much, as I recall I didn't drive home. To my credit we had been walking around in the heat for four hours prior to tasting, and the four glasses of champaign wern't going to drink themselves, right?

Well, all I know is that J and I had more wine while we visited you two in Italy than we have had since. But it was all wonderful. Oh and thanks for letting T3 come down and play for a few days! I am really looking forward to it!

Kilroy was here!

That sounds like so much fun. What is the name of the $4 wine you purchased?

The $4 wine we bought was the Chardonnay by Grouchy Gaucho. :-)
I first found the stuff about a year and a half ago, and all they had then was a Malbec. Now they've got all sorts of different varietals, and though we usually don't do whites, their Chardonnay was great! The best is that they have a little poem about the gaucho on each bottle.
